May - Week 1
This past week students counted, added and subtracted vehicles as they ran them down a hot wheels track trying to get the counter to reach 100 and drove them in and out of “parking lots”. The SKs started learning to write number sentences to represent their subtraction stories.
The ditch is alive with water striders and a variety of frog species. We made observations of what is changing in and around our own special trees. Some are sprouting buds, maples are shedding small fluffy red flowers, pussywillows are yellow and buzzing with bees, others have strawberry plants, ferns, grass and flowers growing underneath. Students made small houses out of branches, pine needles, leaves and stones for the forest fairies who are returning from their winter in warmer climates.
We also walked downtown, noting the particular characteristics of our Minden community. We have a school, a library, a river, bridges and a boardwalk. Students noticed that in town there are lots of signs, streets and sidewalks, lights, stores, restaurants, banks, vehicles and people. Next week we will continue to learn about the significant people, places and environments in our local area.
